ampersand!
Apr 27th, 2006 by Ali
the month of april is almost up, and at 12 midnight on the 28th, i found my final chance to catch last year’s “pride & prejudice.” two donald sutherland movies in one day! well worth staying up (i was able to fix/make some clothing and do my nails weird shades of purple in the meantime). now i remember why in my head, england equals dark and neutral shades of black, grey, and green.
what did i think? i really liked it. i’ve read the book what seems a million times, and you know what’s going to happen, but i really liked this version. elizabeth was elizabeth, darcy was… fitzwilliam, and it was all very proper and as one would think it would be. all very prettily shot and etcetera. the main things i liked the most were shots of the characters being themselves (like at the first ball and after bingley and darcy see the bennet girls after all the awkward times). this version of the novel changes some aspects, but it’s much more… interesting this way. like lady catherine just barging in at night.
the meetings of elizabeth and darcy are always fun to see, but the take on them was different in a way i hadn’t thought of before. dramatic rain scenes and mirror staring. i remember writing my paper in 12th grade (what was that final paper called? in ib? i totally forgot.), and being reminded of the subject again, i can see how i did have a point, but i should have dug further. or chosen a different book- austen did actually have an epistle based novel. darn people in the 18th century and their letter writing.
i chose that subject because of darcy… he was an amazingly closed up character. i like him in this movie- he smiles. he smiles! at times, he seems like a happy teenager, so nice to see since he’s always so… dour. (i’ve never used the word “dour” before.) that kind of teenager look makes me want to leave colin firth… strange.
(randomly- i think there should have been more wickham, and jena malone was an interesting see. she’s actually a year older than kiera knightley, and she’s supposed to play a younger sister.)
ever wonder which jane austen character you are? i’ve read so many of her books, and i’ve wanted to be elizabeth or marianne, but geez, you know that not me. i’m eleanor… hard-core strict bitch. no, more like fanny. who cares? ever since i was in middle school, i loved all of the characters, and think about the silly things they had to go through, dancing all night in hot, stuffy rooms and desperately searching for a husband.
… but most importantly… MEETING IN A FIELD AT DAYBREAK??? yeah, he totally just walked all night to find you, lizzie. 6 o’clock in the morning, duh. him and his unbuttoned shirt and unkempt hair. just wanted to kiss you while the fog was making your hair all frizzy. or he wanted to see that stupid sunrise make the whole moment just “magical.” can’t have a normal proposal like all of the other boring people. and perfect sunlight through the kissing moment… siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick. sick. ok, not sick. just a little too much. man, the end is soooooooooo… funny. people in love. oh, they’re silly. he’s in his pajamas, it looks like. and they kiss. kissing doesn’t happen in jane austen.
i’m just jealous. stupid darcy, ruin men and humanity for us all. like lloyd dobler. boooo. (kissing does happen in jane austen. although… i think she was never married. did she get such kissings? i need to talk to her in heaven- ask her about the dirty details.)
i am so taking billy to pemberly. freakin’ going to make him speak to me like a british person, and call me……… “mrs. darcy.” (SICK.)
all right, 2:05. i need to learn when to quit.
